DO I REALLY NEED A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

The best way to find out if a tooth extraction is right for you is to see Dr. Mark Ashy for a consultation. He can examine your mouth and assess your oral health, and help you decide if a tooth extraction is right for you. There are a few reasons extractions may be necessary.

First, if a wisdom tooth is erupting improperly, it should be pulled to prevent further damage to the surrounding teeth. Many people do not have enough room for the wisdom teeth, which come in between the ages of 17-25. This can lead to a variety of complications, so extraction is often recommended.

An extraction may also be necessary if you have an infected tooth or a tooth that’s been damaged by an oral injury, or by gum disease. If the tooth is too damaged to repair it with a treatment like a root canal and a dental crown, it may need to be extracted to prevent further complications.

Finally, a tooth extraction may be needed to prepare for another treatment. Full dentures, for example, require the extraction of all of your remaining teeth to ensure the dentures can fit properly onto your gums.

DOES IT HURT TO HAVE A TOOTH PULLED?

No. Your mouth will be completely numb during the tooth extraction process, so you will not feel any pain or discomfort. We use the latest numbing agents and techniques to ensure a pain-free extraction process. In addition, we offer nitrous sedation at our office to help you feel more comfortable during your procedure.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL AFTER AN EXTRACTION?

It will usually take about 2 weeks for your mouth to fully heal and recover after an extraction. During this time, it’s very important to follow the recovery instructions provided to you by Dr. Mark Ashy. This will ensure that you can recover quickly and without any complications.

WILL I NEED AN IMPLANT TO REPLACE MY TOOTH?

If you have had a tooth pulled because it was damaged or affected by tooth decay or gum disease, a dental implant may be recommended to replace your tooth.

Dental implants are the best option for restoring one or more missing teeth, and it’s typically a good idea to replace your missing tooth as soon as possible. This is because after losing a tooth, the underlying jaw bone will begin to deteriorate, losing up to 25% of its mass within a year.

Implants require a strong jaw bone for placement, so getting an implant soon after you lose your tooth can save you some time and money, and ensure you do not need additional treatments like bone grafting.

WHAT FOODS OR DRINKS SHOULD I AVOID AFTER A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

After an extraction, you have an open wound in your mouth. You must be careful around the extraction site, do your best not to irritate it and avoid dislodging blood clots which can lead to Dry socket. You should only eat soft foods in the first few days to a week of your tooth extraction. Examples of safe foods to eat include:

  • Applesauce
  • Pudding
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Cool soup
  • Smoothies (no straw)

You should avoid drinking alcohol or consuming anything hot for at least the first 24 hours. Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy. Do not drink through a straw for the first 24 hours. Examples of foods you should avoid include:

  • Tough cuts of meat
  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Cookies
  • Gum
  • Nuts
  • Hard candy

CAN I EXERCISE AFTER A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

You should avoid all forms of vigorous exercise for at least 4 days following a tooth extraction. Intense exercise or physical activity can dislodge blood clots, leading to a painful dry socket. It can also cause excessive bleeding by increasing your blood pressure. Rest is especially important in the first 24 hours.

You should also avoid strenuous activity when taking powerful pain medication that comes with side effects. Speak to your dentist about when you can expect to return to your normal activities. After a few days, as your symptoms decrease, you may be able to introduce some light activity such as walking.

However, you should abstain from lifting weights for at least 5 days. Once you return to your normal activities, assess your symptoms. If you notice an increase in bleeding, pain, or swelling, you should stop and wait a few more days.

ARE EXTRACTIONS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Most dental insurance plans will cover tooth extractions as long as they are medically necessary due to decay, damage, or impaction. If the extraction is deemed necessary to prevent worsening damage that cannot be repaired with any other restorative treatment, insurance typically covers them up to 50-80%.

Extractions may not be covered if your tooth can be restored with a root canal, if it’s for cosmetic reasons, or to make room for orthodontic treatment. However, this depends on what insurance provider and specific policy you have, so contact your insurance to ask what they cover.

At Elite Dentistry, we accept most PPO plans, but even if you don’t have dental insurance, we offer financing options through CareCredit.
